Setting the stage on fire with her powerful Qawwali tracks, Chanchal Bharti is a renowned Sufi singer and a ubiquitous figure in the Indian Sufi and Qawwali stage. She is in fact one of the few remaining from the dying breed of women qawwals. She is a flag bearer in this genre of singing and has dutifully preserved and nurtured this ancient form of music. The very fact that not many women Qawwali singers can be found shows the difficult nature of this form of singing. But what has set Chanchal Bharti aside is that she has broken barriers of all kinds – from gender to geography – and has carved a name of herself in the annals of history through sheer dedication and a passion for singing.
Born in Banaras, Uttar Pradesh, she was inclined towards singing from a tender age. She started her shashtriya sangeet training under the tutelage of Late Pandit Shyam Lal Mishra who belongs to the Banaras Gharana.
